SCHOOL-AGE
School-Age children may experience one or more of the following disorders:
1. Speech Sound Disorders- the difficulty of producing specific sounds in a position of a word, phrase or sentence.
2. Language Disorders- the difficulty with comprehension and expression of words
3. Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Difficulty with thinking skills such as memory, perception, reasoning and judgment
4. Stuttering- Interruption of the flow of speech
5. Voice Disorders- Quality of voice may include hoarseness, nasality, or volume.
*** Speech sound disorders, language disorders, and stuttering are described in greater detail in each of their sections above.
It is important to note that speech and language skills are important for academic success and learning. Reading, writing, gesturing, listening, and speaking are forms of language which are the basis of our communication. Therefore, ensuring the ability to communicate with peers and adults is essential for a student to succeed in school.
When a school-age child has one or more of the disorders mentioned, the child will frequently not perform at grade level. These children may avoid attending classes, show difficulty in expressing and understanding language, show poor judgment, misunderstand social cues or even have difficulty with school exams. Providing the appropriate intervention to these children will enhance their academic skills, and perform at grade-level.
Speech - language pathologists will ensure the best quality of care for your children while targeting goals including language, speech-sound disorders, stuttering, voice disorders or cognitive-communication disorders.
